What happened
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has completed Project Rainier, an AI supercomputer developed in partnership with AI company Anthropic. The supercomputer features nearly half a million custom Trainium2 chips and is already in use by Anthropic to build and deploy its AI model, Claude. Anthropic plans to scale Claude to run on more than one million Trainium2 chips by the end of 2025.
Why it matters
- Project Rainier significantly increases AWS's AI compute capacity, enhancing its competitiveness in the AI cloud market.
- The partnership with Anthropic and the new supercomputer are expected to drive AWS revenue growth in the coming years.
- Running Claude on AWS infrastructure could shift Anthropicâs primary compute provider role from Google to Amazon.
Key facts
- 1. Project Rainier includes nearly 500,000 Trainium2 chips and is one of the worldâs largest AI compute clusters.
- 2. Anthropicâs AI model Claude is expected to run on over 1 million Trainium2 chips by the end of 2025.
- 3. Amazon has invested at least $8 billion in Anthropic and Project Rainier could contribute up to 2.6% of AWS revenue in 2026, rising to over 4% in 2027.
