What happened
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has completed Project Rainier, one of the world's largest AI supercomputers, in partnership with AI research company Anthropic. The supercomputer features nearly half a million AWS-designed Trainium2 chips and is already being used by Anthropic to build and deploy its AI model, Claude. This project was completed less than a year after its announcement.
Why it matters
- Project Rainier provides Anthropic with over five times the compute power of its previous AI training clusters.
- The supercomputer supports large-scale AI model training and inference, potentially improving AI capabilities.
- AWSâs vertical integration of chip design, software, and server architecture aims to reduce AI costs and accelerate machine learning development.
Key facts
- 1. Project Rainier includes nearly 500,000 Trainium2 chips.
- 2. Anthropicâs Claude model is expected to run on more than 1 million Trainium2 chips by the end of 2025.
- 3. AWS and Anthropic completed the supercomputer less than one year after the project was announced.
