Samsung affiliates invest $1B in Helix, expanding AI infrastructure play

Six Samsung affiliates, including Samsung Electronics, are investing a total of $1 billion in Helix, an AI infrastructure specialist. This move marks Samsung's expansion into the entire data center sector, beyond its semiconductor supply business.

TL;DR

  • Samsung affiliates invest $1 billion in Helix, an AI infrastructure company.
  • This investment expands Samsung's AI business into the data center ecosystem.
  • Helix provides end-to-end data center construction and operations, with a focus on AI infrastructure.

What happened

Six Samsung affiliates, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, announced a $1 billion investment in Helix Digital Infrastructure. Samsung Electronics will contribute $500 million, with the remaining five affiliates investing the other $500 million.

Helix, launched in June, specializes in securing power through power plants and transmission networks, connecting optical communication networks, and providing end-to-end data center construction and operations. The company is led by Adam Selipsky, former CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This investment makes the Samsung affiliates founding investors in Helix, joining KKR, NVIDIA, U.S. power company Vistra, and the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA).

Why it matters

This investment reflects Samsung's strategy to broaden its AI business from semiconductor supply to the entire data center ecosystem. Samsung Electronics supplies key components for AI servers, such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DRAM, and storage devices.

Other Samsung affiliates bring relevant expertise to the table: Samsung C&T in data center and power plant construction, Samsung SDS in center operations and GPU cloud services, and Samsung SDI in uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

Samsung Electronics stated that this investment will expand the competitive edge of its affiliates' components to systemic and infrastructural influence, highlighting the growing importance of data centers capable of handling massive computations and stable power.

Key facts

  • Total investment: $1 billion (approximately 1.36 trillion Korean won).
  • Samsung Electronics' contribution: $500 million.
  • Remaining five affiliates' contribution: $500 million.
  • Helix's launch date: June.
  • Helix's CEO: Adam Selipsky, former CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Other founding investors in Helix: KKR, NVIDIA, U.S. power company Vistra, and the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA).
  • Samsung Electronics' previous AI investment: Led a funding round for French AI company Mistral earlier this month.

Context

This investment is part of a broader trend of tech companies expanding their AI infrastructure capabilities. As AI services become more prevalent in daily life and industries, the demand for data centers capable of handling massive computations and stable power is growing.

Samsung's investment in Helix follows its recent funding round for Mistral, indicating a strategic focus on AI model and platform development specialized in semiconductor design and manufacturing.
